Do Hawai’i Dispensaries Accept Out-of-State Medical Marijuana Cards?

With many states offering legalized marijuana, we get a number of inquiries from traveling patients wanting to know if their medical marijuana card can be used in Hawai’i. While Hawai’i dispensaries may not accept out-of-state marijuana cards, a new program that allows visitors to apply for a temporary Out-of-State (OSP) medical cannabis card. With a Hawai’i OSP card you can purchase medical cannabis from any Hawaii dispensary.  In this article, we offer tips for out-of-state patients to plan ahead in receiving their 60-day Hawai’i OSP card.

Here are some key highlights about the program we consider to be most important for traveling patients to know:

  • You can apply for a temporary Hawai’i Out-of State (OSP) registration card as early as 60 days prior to your arrival in Hawaii (“start date”)
  • International medical cannabis registration cards are currently not accepted.
  • You must have a valid medical cannabis registration card from another U.S. state/territory or District of Columbia
    • If your medical cannabis card does not have the expiration date on it (i.e. New York), you will need to provide additional documents that state the expiration date of your registration.
